mint-chocolate

We love our mint chocolate at Enjoy!, so we were excited (and a little surprised!) to hear that in the States it has its own day on February 19th.  It was started by the US National Confectioners Association, and is now celebrated every year.

We thought we’d borrow the day because of the popularity of this classic flavour pairing.  In fact Enjoy!’s mint chocolate flavoured products are some of our best sellers.

Mint

The herb mint has a long history of use, dating back at least as far as ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. It is thought to have been brought to Britain by Roman soldiers.

The history of its name is believed to come from ancient Greek mythology. The story goes that Persephone (wife of Hades) turned her unfortunate love rival, the nymph Minthe, into a mint plant.

Mint is valued not only for its taste, but also for its benefits to digestion. Peppermint oil is used in modern medicine as an antispasmodic that helps to alleviate stomach cramps and bloating. Source: NHS

Perhaps that helps to explain why mint chocolate is so popular as an after dinner treat!

Origins of Mint Chocolate

The history of this flavour combo is thought to stem from the 16th century where mint was added to hot chocolate drink to neutralise the bitterness of the chocolate.

Combining Mint and Chocolate

Check out our great Mint Chocolate Tart recipe on our website.  It looks and tastes impressive, but is surprisingly easy to make.

Or, more simply, you could just add mint leaves- or pieces of mint chocolate- into a cup of hot chocolate.

If you have a favourite mint chocolate recipe you’d like to share, we would love to see it!
